Save the date!

Algerian Action will be participating in this years ‘Big Draw’ event organised by the campaign for drawing. Their theme for 2012 is taken from painter Paul Klee who famously said that ‘drawing is taking a line for a walk’.
So with that in mind, on Saturday 6th October we are inviting YOU to come and take a line for a walk whilst exploring the many arts and crafts that Algeria has to offer. From pottery to lace to basket-weaving each region has it’s speciality and on the day we hope to give you a brief insight into Algeria’s brilliantly rich crafting heritage.
In addition to demonstrations for all, children will be able to try various activities including calligraphy , mosaic design and tile painting.  There will also be a mini Souk made up of stalls selling a variety of hand-made goods. Furthermore, a delicious range of food will be on offer including some Algerian specialities.
We hope to see you there!
If you make or sell hand-made items and would like to have a stall at the event please email info@algerianaction.co.uk for more details and a booking form- places are strictly limited so be quick!
We also need people to help out on the day so if you would be interested in volunteering please do get in touch.
And lastly but certainly not least, we need lots of gorgeous hand-crafted goodies to sell on our stall so if you would like to help our fundraising efforts in this way we would love to hear from you!

Charity Craft Auction

For the regulars among you, I’m sure you will remember my recent post about the five year old boy in urgent need of medical treatment. I have been putting together a few ideas to raise funds to help Youcef get the operations he needs and so, I wanted to tell you about the first event: a charity craft auction that will take place on-line.

To make the auction a success I need as many people as possible to donate one of their hand-made creations, items can be literally anything-jewellery, candles, sweets, bags, hairslides, blankets, baby clothes, toys, paintings the list goes on -if you make it you can donate it! Plus of course, as many people as possible are needed to place bids :-)

The very best thing about the auction being on-line is that you can join in wherever you are in the world.

THE DETAILS

WHEN? The auction will start on Friday 25th May and run for a week, finishing up at midnight on Thursday 31st May 2012

WHERE? Online. Auctions will take place here, face book and various other blogs and websites

HOW TO HELP? If you have a blog / website / face book page and would like to auction one of your items there that would be fantastic! likewise if you want to hold an auction in person among friends, family, colleagues that would also be great.  If you would prefer me to auction your item then I am more than happy to do so, just send me either the item or a picture and details of it.

If you are planning to donate something please do let me know a.s.a.p. I really would like to start compiling a list of the fabulous goodies that will be on offer and where people can join in the auctions.  At the very latest I need to know by Friday 18th May but really, the earlier the better!

If you are not really up for making something then please do help by participating in the bidding and by spreading the word.

As people sign up to donate items I will update the site here-so please do check back.

As always many, many thanks for your support, every penny/dinar/ euro/ dollar raised will help a little boy receive urgent medical treatment he simply wont otherwise be able to get.

Yesterday- the day of our Bazaar!

After weeks of preparation the day of our Bazaar finally arrived yesterday. There was a whole range of stalls selling  jewellery, toys, clothing, toiletries, bags, honey all kinds of things- along with face painting, activities, a bouncy castle and extra delicious food! A great day was had by all even the Sun came out  so people were able to eat and relax outside too.

£1070 was raised on the day which is just absolutely fantastic!

Huge thanks are owed to the people that came along to the event, to those special people who so generously made and donated things to be sold on our stall, to Julie, Hurriyyah, Louise, Riana, Sharon and Meryam who kindly volunteered on the day and to Silvia and Sarah who donated their skills and offered beauty treatments.  Thank you all so much!

Great news!

Huge, huge thanks to all of those who contributed to get Abdul Kader a wheelchair. I am astonished just how generous people have been as in just four days the target of £200 has been reached! The amount has been achieved through individual donations and the takings from our fundraising stall at the RSG Eid Bazaar which took place in Ilford on Saturday.

I’ll update again once Abdul Kader has his wheels!

A fab Saturday

I have, over the years had a stall at many events. In the past selling my own hand-made creations and now fundraising for Algerian Action.  As with all things some turn out better than others, Well Saturday turned out really well!

It was such a lovely afternoon, lots of friendly people and a real buzz in the air. Delicious cakes and stalls laden with gorgeous things to buy. Samina with the help of her friend Aisha did a fabulous job of organizing and hosting the event so special thanks go to them for not only  allowing Algerian Action to participate but for the very generous donation too.

On the day we raised a total of £250 which is just fantastic!

Spring Fair 2011

6th March, after much preparation the day of our Spring Fair finally arrived. There was a total of 26 stalls selling lots of different things, plus stalls for food and kids activities. It was lovely to see some of our longtime supporters and finally put faces to names and wonderful to find that quite a few people had turned up with bags full of donations too.

I think people enjoyed themselves and the kids definitely had lots of fun!

Special thanks to my dearest friend Meryam for absolutely slogging her guts out during the event and helping me to prepare for it. Thanks are also due to Louise and Susie for doing an amazing job at entertaining the kids and to  Sharon for helping wherever needed. Thank you also to Helen and Phyl for their fabulous donations of jewellery and knits which we sold on our stall, to Pat for her very cute knitted toys and to Marion whose pretty bracelets arrived just in time.

I should also mention ‘Little Sweet Things 4 U’  which is a new cake company based in East London who specialize in individual and small home baked cakes, their range is extensive and includes Lemon pie, Cheese cake, Cupcakes and Tiramisu. I personally, am positively addicted to their Russian Chocolate Charlotte and my boys loved their waffles. This company attended our Spring Fair and very generously donated all of their takings to us- thank you so much Umm Hamza!

Most importantly thank you to everyone who came along and made the day a success, we raised a total of £625 so, I think all the hard work was worth it!

A little update

Sooo much is going on at the moment.

Our Spring Fair, our first fund~raising event of the year will be taking place on Sunday 6th March, that’s just a little over two weeks away! There is so much work involved in putting on an event like this but we hope it will be worth it. We are fully booked for stalls now and some really lovely products will be available including hand~crafted jewellery, candles, paintings, clothing, books, toys, body creams and lotions not to mention the fabulously delicious food! We will be having our own stall selling a variety of items. HUGE thanks to all of you who have sent, or are planning to send things in for the stall, the toy patterns sent in by an anonymous donor are just lovely!

The ‘Cake and a cuppa’ campaign launched last week is going well. Five people have been in touch already to say they are planning events. This really is such a simple idea that can be pretty much be done anywhere by anyone with great results.  If you would like to help by holding a ‘cake and a cuppa’ event in your area take a look at our short info sheet that offers tips and ideas on making your event a success.

The family in need continue to be one of our main priorities. Thank you so much to those of you who have sent in clothing, toiletries and other items. We will be sending a second bag to them in two~three weeks time. As I mentioned before, what this family really need is somewhere dry and secure  to live, a proper home.  The amount needed is £1,700 I’m very pleased to say that so far Algerian Action have  raised £320 towards the cost which is a really great start and my friend in Algeria with her group  have already raised a little over £400, they are also holding a private sale on Saturday to try and raise even more funds.

If we all help just a little bit we can make a real difference to this family and many more like them. Thank you so much to all of you who so generously give your support.
