Spreading the love

Of reading!  Last Thursday it was World Book day.

world-book-day-logo

In the UK and several countries around the world  quite a big thing is made of the day with special events held and children dressing up as characters from their favourite books, here in Algeria it is not such a big deal but, hoping to encourage an interest in reading and always ready to give gifts to kids we joined in the fun by giving books (and a few other treats!) to children in Algiers.

The week ahead looks to be another busy one,the weather is gloriously Spring like with flowers popping up all over the place, my mind is bubbling with lots of ideas for our craft workshops and I am whipping up a storm with paint and glitter -what could be better!

Whatever you have planned for the week I hope it’ll be a lovely one!

DZ dollies (& other soft toys)

This year Algerian Action reaches it’s 10th Anniversary- how time flies! One of the ways we hope to mark the milestone is by giving as many children as we can a handmade doll or stuffed toy. From the beginning we have been giving children toys ,this isn’t anything new…in fact it was the distinct lack of toys that spurred me on to start the charity in the first place and it is for this reason that it seems so appropriate that a decade on, we continue our efforts and put as many toys as we can into the hands of children that need them.

aateds.jpg

The dolls/stuffed toys will be given to children all over- street children, orphans, refugees, those in hospital and those from the many families that struggle to make ends meet.

Now, as I have said so many times before ‘ we can’t do it without YOUR help’ I really am relying on you dear sewers , crafters , knitters and other kind supporters to help us pull this off. Algerian Action has always been about the small actions of many making a big difference…and believe me to the person wearing rags, to the one who is cold, to the one who is hungry, to the mother with nothing for her child your donations of clothing, blankets and food do make a big difference, they make every difference.

So, about the dolls or stuffed toys… I know what a creative bunch you are and I really want you to use your imagination and creativity- Remember, the doll that you make may be the only toy the child has or will ever have so make it special!

Just a few considerations-

*They shouldn’t be too large, I’m thinking around 15cm-25cm tall. Some children will receive toys as a group so it is better if toys are of a similar size.

*Make sure that any embellishments are securely stitched on so they wont fall off or be a hazard for younger children.

*They can be made using any fabric or yarn and can be in any colour.

That’s it, the rest is up to you!

We really want to give as many toys as we can so, if you know of a child (or children) living in Algeria that would love  a doll or soft toy to cuddle and play with please let me know by emailing me at info@algerianaction.co.uk

And for those living in Algiers there are some fun, toy related children’s workshops being lined up for Spring so watch this space for more details coming soon!

As always, thank-you so much for your continued support.

Have a great weekend! Emma x

P.S. If you come across any fab free patterns please share and I will post them up to give others inspiration.

Edited to add– If you are not a crafter but, still want to help bought toys are very much appreciated too!

On another note the creation of our first community garden is going well! The diggers have been in, a dangerous wall has been pulled down and the local youths are really getting stuck in with helping which is just brilliant.  There is more clearing to be done but, once that is out of the way it’s then on to the fun stuff!

Thank you for making a difference.

Have a great weekend!

World book day 2016!

It seems as if there is a ‘day’ for everything if one bothers to look into it…commercialism perhaps? I remember many years ago my Nan being appalled at the introduction of ‘Grandparents day’ and we were all warned to not even think of buying her a gift or a card as she thought it was just a way for ‘them’ to make more money! Wise words maybe. However, looking at the calendar for the next few weeks to pick a suitable date for our new book launch.. the 3rd March, World book day just seemed entirely appropriate!

rsz_litterbugcover-page-001     Our latest book entitled ‘The litter bugs’ charts the tale of a group of  bugs who are persuaded to change their messy ways by a swarm of nature loving bees. The story, which is written in both English and Arabic aims to teach young children about the importance of looking after the environment in a fun and colourful way.

All proceeds from the sale of the book will help fund the creation of community gardens and green spaces via our ‘Just one seed’ scheme. The book will also be distributed to children in Algeria to raise awareness of environmental issues.

The book is 24 pages long and is 210mm square in size. It is priced at £3.50 plus postage  and will be sold exclusively from our website.  **Up until the 3rd March you can pre-order it here and get  it for the special price of  £3 plus FREE UK delivery. **

Happy reading!

Are you ready to join hands and make some noise?

just one seed cover

Just one seed is our newest and biggest project yet and a little different to anything that we have done before. It is an environmental project which will show that even the smallest of actions can create big changes.

This year we will be encouraging children and young people to care for their environment and learn about nature in fun and creative ways. We have also set ourselves the challenge to fill neglected areas with colourful flowers and create beautiful community gardens in a number of places.

Our first adventure is to create a community garden complete with play area and seating in Meftah, an area just a little outside of the capital. This garden will be a place for the whole community to enjoy. It will provide a fun space for children to play in and an area for adults to sit and relax. Through creating and caring for the garden  It will be a place for people to come together, share their skills, gain new experiences, care for the environment and make a long lasting difference. The benefits for everyone are far reaching.  Work has already started on our first garden and we are so excited and totally thrilled at the prospect of turning mud and debris into something gloriously beautiful and beneficial but, to do it we really need your help.

In Algeria there is a saying: one hand can’t clap. individually, even with the best of intentions we are limited, but collectively the possibilities are endless. Together we can do so much more, together we can make our community gardens a reality . Are you ready to join hands and make some noise?

How to help:

We would love for you to donate seeds. We really hope to nurture plants from all over the world and your donation of even just one seed could help us do that. We are up for a challenge so all types of seeds are very welcome-flowers,herbs,fruit,vegetables we are happy to try them all!

If you are in Algiers and fancy volunteering to get your hands dirty please get in touch (our email is info@algerianaction.co.uk) we would love to hear from you!

Alternatively you may like to sponsor something beautiful for our gardens and green spaces. This is a great way for groups, individuals and businesses to support our work. Sponsorship starts at just a ‘one off’ £1. for more details on how to help in this way visit our website.

June

June has been a very busy month, for me personally and for Algerian Action.

Lots of things were donated which is just wonderful! every single item given makes a difference to somebody in need so it really is lovely to see so many people giving generously and making the lives of others that little bit easier. All types of things have been sent in, below is just a small sample.

june rupWe have also been collecting for our Eid Appeal. If you would like to contribute to this by donating sweets, balloons, small toys the items must be received in the UK by the 7th July at the very latest. Our last shipment before Eid will be on the 9th of July so really there is just about a week left to help.

eid 2013

Like last year we will also be providing food parcels to those in need for the month of Ramadan, we held an auction last weekend on Facebook to help fundraise for this so huge thanks to all of you who participated and made it such a worthwhile event.

We will be holding another one at the beginning of August to help us buy more wheelchairs for children in the Mustapha Pascha hospital in Algiers. The children’s cancer unit didn’t have any wheelchairs to transport the children from the ward  to the chemotherapy  treatment area so last month we bought them two but, we hope to get them another three.

If you are a business owner, crafter or just have something lying around at home that you don’t need please get in touch – we would love to have your support for our August auction.
