February is here already- wherever does the time go! We have been super busy lately and judging by the fabulous donations that have been arriving you have been too!
Look at these gorgeous cardigans for our baby packs-aren’t the sparkly buttons just lovely?!
I don’t have the patience to knit for anyone bigger than a baby but, I am so glad that some of you do and with such beautiful workmanship too!
More perfect pastel creations for our baby packs which are appreciated so much by our new (or new again) mums.
Plus fantastic colourful blankets!
Thank you all so much for your generosity and support it means the world to us!
Have a great weekend, Emma x
Thank you so much to all of you who have been sending beautiful blankets in! They will all make great additions to our baby packs and will be appreciated so much by our new mum’s to be. Huge thanks for the beautiful clothing too! Below are just a few pictures: a sample but, everything donated is very gratefully received.Thank you!
We have been very busy this last few weeks making preparations for our Winter appeal. As always, during the coldest months we will be giving blankets and warm clothing to those most in need. If you are in the UK and wish to donate clothing or other items we need to receive your donations by the end of November to ensure that they reach Algiers in time for when they are needed most. No donation is ever too small….a pair of gloves, a hat or a pair of socks makes the world of difference to someone who is cold with no way of getting warm.
Right now I am busy stitching squares together to make multi coloured wearable blankets! I hope you too have a fun, craft filled October planned!
Lots of beautiful baby blankets have been arriving which is wonderful as these are so very needed for our baby packs at the moment. Here are just a few, thank you so much to all of those who have donated!
Yes,I know we are still in August but, Autumn is just around the corner and my thoughts are already turning to the colder months and thinking of ways to ensure that those in need are kept warm enough throughout Winter.
For a long time now we have given handmade blankets out- (made from squares as it is soooo much more manageable to knit a 6” square than it is to make a great big blanket all by yourself!) but, this week I saw something that looked amazing…a dressing gown/long cardigan/coat that was made from squares. How much easier it would be to stay warm each day by wearing a piece of clothing made from squares rather than needing to swaddle up in a blanket.
So is anyone up for the challenge? I have worked out that roughly it will take 112 (gulp!) 5” squares to make one dressing gown/coat that will fit most people.
If you would like to join in and help those in need in this way all you need to do is knit or crochet a 5” square and send it in….or if you are feeling really brave and energetic you could have a go at making a whole one by yourself!
All colours and types of yarn can be used.
Cant wait to see what beautiful creations we can come up with!
August was a really busy month for me and for Algerian Action.
Along with the every day coming and goings it was particularly important to ensure that all of the Eid gifts arrived in Algeria in time for Eid ul fitr which fell on 20th August. It was truly wonderful to give gifts to so many children all of who enjoyed their sweet treats, toys and clothes very much. thank you so much to all of those that contributed and made our Eid Appeal 2012 such a success.
August also saw the launch of ‘A taste of Algeria’ a cookery book that I compiled as a fundraising initiative. The response to the book has been amazing and much more than I could have ever hoped for. The first batch has already completely sold out and a second order has been placed (delivery due early next week). If you would like to order a copy please visit here All profits from the sale of the book go towards assisting destitute families in Algeria.
A lot of time was also spent on forthcoming plans:
In particular the baby pack project is being extended to include providing for women in a refuge and a hospital, hopefully this will spread even further as time progresses. To ensure that the project continues to succeed donations of baby related items are really needed, items can be new, pre-loved or hand-crafted.
Plans are also well under-way for our next event due to take place on 6th October.
If you would like to volunteer to help on the day or have a stall please do get in touch, otherwise if you are in the London area it would be great to see you there!
September for me, always feels like the beginning of a new year (must be all those years spent studying!) it’s a natural time to embark on something new and have new challenges. For me personally, I am awaiting the birth of a new baby, due in a few weeks time. I also have a long, long list of new crafting projects I hope to try……… Whatever you have planned or manage to get up to I hope you have lots of fun and a super September!
P.S- there were some difficulties with the charity email address recently. The problem has now been fixed but, if you made contact within the last two weeks and didn’t receive a reply please do send it again as it has not been seen.
Providing clothing for newborns and young babies has always been part of the work of Algerian Action, indeed it was how the charity got started.
For several years now ‘baby packs’ have been given to women in the community but, starting this Autumn our packs will also be distributed to ladies in a refuge and to those on the maternity ward of one hospital. Plans to do this have been going on for what seems like ages and I am so pleased that finally it has come together.
The packs typically include the following:
A light-weight blanket, vest, baby-gro, hat, mittens/bootees,cardigan, a small toy and a few nappies for baby. In addition a small body spray or soap is included for the new mother. All of this is then put into a cloth drawstring bag.
There is always a demand for the packs and this will of course increase as we distribute in more places.
If you would like to help us with this particular project well, that would be just fantastic!
All donations of the above mentioned items are needed. Clothing should be size 0-3 months, blankets need to measure a minimum of 12″ square but can of course be larger. Items can be new, pre-loved or handmade but they must be clean and in excellent condition.
Cloth bags are also needed, these are just a basic rectangle with a ribbon or cord threaded through the top. The size doesn’t need to be exact but roughly the size of an A4 sheet of paper. All colours and type of fabric may be used.
Every item donated is appreciated and really does make a difference to a person in need.
As always, huge thanks for your support!
