DZ dollies (& other soft toys)

This year Algerian Action reaches it’s 10th Anniversary- how time flies! One of the ways we hope to mark the milestone is by giving as many children as we can a handmade doll or stuffed toy. From the beginning we have been giving children toys ,this isn’t anything new…in fact it was the distinct lack of toys that spurred me on to start the charity in the first place and it is for this reason that it seems so appropriate that a decade on, we continue our efforts and put as many toys as we can into the hands of children that need them.

aateds.jpg

The dolls/stuffed toys will be given to children all over- street children, orphans, refugees, those in hospital and those from the many families that struggle to make ends meet.

Now, as I have said so many times before ‘ we can’t do it without YOUR help’ I really am relying on you dear sewers , crafters , knitters and other kind supporters to help us pull this off. Algerian Action has always been about the small actions of many making a big difference…and believe me to the person wearing rags, to the one who is cold, to the one who is hungry, to the mother with nothing for her child your donations of clothing, blankets and food do make a big difference, they make every difference.

So, about the dolls or stuffed toys… I know what a creative bunch you are and I really want you to use your imagination and creativity- Remember, the doll that you make may be the only toy the child has or will ever have so make it special!

Just a few considerations-

*They shouldn’t be too large, I’m thinking around 15cm-25cm tall. Some children will receive toys as a group so it is better if toys are of a similar size.

*Make sure that any embellishments are securely stitched on so they wont fall off or be a hazard for younger children.

*They can be made using any fabric or yarn and can be in any colour.

That’s it, the rest is up to you!

We really want to give as many toys as we can so, if you know of a child (or children) living in Algeria that would love  a doll or soft toy to cuddle and play with please let me know by emailing me at info@algerianaction.co.uk

And for those living in Algiers there are some fun, toy related children’s workshops being lined up for Spring so watch this space for more details coming soon!

As always, thank-you so much for your continued support.

Have a great weekend! Emma x

P.S. If you come across any fab free patterns please share and I will post them up to give others inspiration.

Edited to add– If you are not a crafter but, still want to help bought toys are very much appreciated too!

On another note the creation of our first community garden is going well! The diggers have been in, a dangerous wall has been pulled down and the local youths are really getting stuck in with helping which is just brilliant.  There is more clearing to be done but, once that is out of the way it’s then on to the fun stuff!

Thank you for making a difference.

Have a great weekend!

Fabulous squares…we are going to start making cushions for the elderly in hospital that are far from family. Most of the hospitals are based in Algiers so it is quite common for patients to be receiving treatment away from the areas in which they live. The cushions will have knitted/crochet squares to the front and fabric to the back. These squares are just perfect!

Aren’t the heart buttons adorable?! The baby project is one that is very close to my heart. I have been blessed to have been able to prepare a hospital bag full of clothes and stuff 5 times over for my own children and am so happy that with your help we can help women who have so little for their newborns get together an outfit and other essentials.

January round up

January was a been a super busy month!

Our book appeal has really taken off and in just one month we have managed to collect almost 700 books of superb quality. We have a target of 1,000 which we need to reach before the summer when the library is due to open so, there is still a little way to go .

Below are just some of the books received in the last week or so.

JANROUND1 JANROUND2 JANROUND3 JANROUND4

Fab clothing has also been donated this month, including some lovely things for our baby pack project. The warmer weather will soon be here in Algeria so we are now starting to collect t.shirts, shorts ect so that it can all be shipped over in good time.

As I mentioned in a previous post, this year we will be assisting a women’s refuge. So far we have already given some toiletries, underwear and other essentials. The refuge  has a number of children there and a small play area has been created. We plan to develop this further and supply the organisation with a number of things for the children that live  there. These donated toys will help us make  a start.

JANROUND5  We have recently started working with a school in Baraki, Algiers and it is through them that we heard about the disabled teenager that had stopped going to school because her father was unable to continue carrying her in. Thanks to your generosity in just a few days we were able to raise enough to buy her a wheelchair.

During the fundraising campaign we were contacted by someone who wished to pay the whole amount, at that time the total had almost be raised so, it was suggested that this person could instead pay for a wheelchair for another, younger disabled  girl who attended the school. The supporter happily agreed, so January also saw two disabled girls become more mobile (pictures to follow). It seems that there are several children in need of this type of assistance and we are now looking into the best way we can try and help.

As always huge thanks for your tremendous support!

Have a fantastic February!
